In addition to treating several different medical diagnoses (chronic migraine, hyperhydrosis or "sweaty underarms", and TMJ), Botox is one of the most popular ways to treat facial wrinkles! This cosmetic benefit was discovered incidentally decades ago when scientists were administering the botulinum toxin on monkeys while looking to treat strabismus, or "crossed eyes". They noticed the wrinkles in between the animals' eyebrows diminished when the medication was injected. The rest is history!
Botox is not the only way to treat cosmetic wrinkles. We now have multiple options for treatment, like Dysport and Xeomin. Xeomin is the same medication as Botox, but it kicks in quicker (one day as opposed to 3-5 days with Botox) and is "preservative free"... this is the option I recommend for patients who tend to have higher levels of sensitivity or reactivity to medications.
Botox and Xeomin last several months (10-12 weeks) and is typically very well tolerated. It's hard not to notice how well this works- patients have described their Botox and Xeomin treatments as "life changing"!
Both Kastle Donovan, CRNP and Catherine Wilson, CRNP are certified in cosmetic and medical Botox and Xeomin administration.
