Understanding GLP-1 Medications: How They Work, Their Benefits, and What to Know Before You Start

By Amy Ricker, CRNP

Over the past few years, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® have become some of the most talked-about options for weight management and metabolic health. While they’ve grown in popularity, it’s important to understand how they work, who they help, and what to look for when considering a prescription or purchasing a compounded version. My goal is to help you feel informed, safe, and confident when discussing whether a GLP-1 is right for you.

What Are GLP-1s and How Do They Work?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, which is a natural hormone your body releases after eating. This hormone plays an important role in appetite, digestion, and blood sugar control.

GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone and work in three primary ways:

  1. They help regulate appetite. GLP-1s slow the emptying of your stomach and help your brain recognize fullness sooner, which naturally reduces appetite and portion sizes.
  1. They improve blood sugar control. They help your body release insulin at the right time, reduce glucose spikes after meals, and support more stable blood sugar throughout the day.
  1. They support long-term metabolic health. GLP-1s help lower inflammation, reduce fat storage in the liver, and support healthier metabolic function overall.

These benefits make GLP-1s useful for certain individuals with type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, or obesity, and for patients who have not seen results through traditional lifestyle changes alone.

What Are the Benefits of GLP-1 Medications?

While results vary from person to person, many patients experience meaningful improvements in both health and quality of life. Benefits may include:

More stable blood sugar levels. This helps prevent complications of diabetes and reduces energy crashes after meals.

Clinically significant weight loss. Many people experience steady, sustainable weight reduction as appetite decreases and metabolism improves.

Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Some GLP-1 medications have been shown to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with diabetes.

Improved energy and mobility. As weight decreases and inflammation lowers, daily tasks often become easier and more comfortable.

Better relationship with food. A decreased drive to overeat often allows patients to focus on making healthier choices without feeling deprived.

What to Look for When Considering a GLP-1 Prescription or Compounded Version

Because demand is high, you may see GLP-1s offered by a variety of clinics, spas, or online retailers. It’s extremely important to be cautious and informed, because not all products are created equal.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  1. Work with a licensed medical provider. GLP-1s are prescription medications that require medical evaluation, ongoing monitoring, and follow-up care.
  1. Choose a reputable pharmacy. If using a compounded version due to medication shortages or cost concerns, make sure your medication comes from a state-licensed, FDA-registered 503A or 503B compounding pharmacy. This ensures quality, sterility, and accurate dosing.
  1. Beware of extremely low prices. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  2. Make sure you’ll receive follow-up support. Successful treatment requires dose adjustments, monitoring of side effects, and guidance on nutrition and lifestyle. Look for a provider who offers ongoing care—not just a prescription.

Are GLP-1s Right for You?

GLP-1 medications can be life-changing for many people, but they are not the right fit for everyone. A complete evaluation is needed to understand your medical history, metabolic health, and weight-loss goals.
